The Best Sleeping Position and How to Choose a Mattress for Yours

There is no such thing as a "best sleep position"

Sleeping positions alone do not lead to added lower back pain or neck pain. Whether you’re a side sleeper, a back sleeper, or a stomach sleeper you just need a mattress that properly supports your sleeping position.

At Helix, we know your sleeping position can have a big impact on the type of support you need. That’s why we divide our mattresses into two categories: Side Sleeper Support and All Positions Support. Let’s dive into both.

Side Sleeper Support

Best For:

  • Side Sleepers – You tend to fall asleep or wake up on either of your sides in a neutral position or fetal position

  • Toss & Turner – You tend to move around from your left side to your right side all night long

  • You’re Not Sure – You might not have a dominant position

  • Key Pressure Points

If you’re frequently in a side sleeping position, you need to think about minimizing pressure relief on your shoulders and hips so you can go from having a good night's sleep to a great night's sleep.

How we Design Our Mattresses With You in Mind

We design these mattresses using memory foam and slightly more “give” in the density of the layers so that your shoulder and hips can have enough sink into the mattress to relieve pressure.

If a mattress is too supportive you may feel stiff and wake up with shoulder pain, which we want to avoid.

Still Unsure About Which Mattress to Choose?

We advise people who toss & turn or who are not sure get matched in our Sleep Quiz to Side Sleeper Support so you can experience the benefits of this pressure-relieving design.

All Positions Support

Best For:

  • Stomach Sleepers – You tend to fall asleep or wake up on your stomach

  • Heavier Side Sleepers – You tend to fall asleep on your side, but you have a higher BMI

  • Back Sleepers – You tend to fall asleep or wake up on your back

  • Key Pressure Points

If you’re frequently back sleeping or stomach sleeping, you need to think about optimizing for spinal alignment when you sleep.

How We Design Our Mattresses with You in Mind

We design these mattresses using Helix Dynamic Foam - our special latex-foam hybrid alternative - and slightly more support with a medium-firm mattress to react to your body shape and make sure your spine doesn’t bow when lying down on your back or face down.

With too little support, you may sink too much which actually puts pressure on your lower back - so we add a little extra.

We advise heavier side sleepers with high BMIs to choose this option because they require a little extra support in the layers of the mattress to avoid sinking too much.

Still Unsure About Which Mattress to Choose?

If you’re not sure which one to choose, we would say play it safe and pick the All Positions Support option.
